GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin and Trine fought to a 2-2 double-overtime tie on Saturday at Zuidema Field.
In the 2018 meeting between the two teams, Trine scored a goal in the first minute of play. The Thunder followed a similar pattern in Saturday's game, scoring in the fifth minute on a goal by Courtney Reece as she headed in a corner kick taken by Marissa Robinett.
Calvin freshman Anna Reimink (Winona Lake, Ind./Lakeland Christian Academy) answered with a goal in the 11th minute to level the score. The goal was her second of the season and on a shot in the box after Trine failed to clear a ball sent in from the wing.
The Knights took a 2-1 lead into halftime as junior Jessie Paulson (Plymouth,, Mich./Plymouth Christian HS) slid a shot in from a difficult angle. The goal was Paulson's sixth of the season.
Calvin dominated possesion in the second half, outshooting Trine 15-3 but it was the Thunder who found the back of the net as Paige Schiebel scored in the 75th minute to tie the score at two. Paulson nearly put the Knights in front with just 1:35 left in regulation as her sliding shot in the box was deflected away by Trine goalkeeper Carmen Sweigard.
In the first overtime, Calvin outshot Trine 3-0 but the Thunder outshot Calvin 3-1 in the second overtime stanza. Calvin junior goalkeeper Amy Kliewer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern HS) made a key save with 4:37 left to play.
Kliewer finished with three saves for Calvin while Swiegard came up with seven saves for Trine. Calvin finished with a 28-10 shots at goal advantage.
The Knights (3-8-3 overall, 1-2-2 MIAA) remain in sixth place in the MIAA standings.
Calvin returns to play on Wednesday when it travels to Alma for a 4 p.m. match.
