ADRIAN, Mich. - The 2018 season came to an end for the Calvin women's soccer team as the Knights dropped a 3-0 decision to Adrian College Wednesday night in the MIAA Tournament semifinals.
The two teams played to a scoreless draw through one half of play with each team firing five shots at goal in the opening 45 minutes.
Adrian broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute however as McKenna Mahoney made a move near the top of the 18-yard box and fired a left-footed shot inside the right post to put the Bulldogs up 1-0. Just over two minutes later, Adrian's Caroline Fleming gave her team a 2-0 advantage by placing a shot into the upper 90 from a sharp angle.
Calvin fought back, pressing the attack. Junior Nicole Hale (Colorado Springs, Co./Classical Academy) came close in the 62nd minute, blasting a shot that hit the cross bar and came straight down, inches shy of going across the goal line.
Adrian (13-5-1) sealed the win with a goal in the 79th minute.
Calvin (10-5-3) outshot Adrian 14-12 and held an edge in corner kicks by a 4-2 margin but the Bulldogs were adept at finishing their second half chances.
"I thought we came out and competed hard tonight. I'm really happy with our effort," said Calvin women's soccer coach Emily Ottenhoff. "Adrian is a good team and finished its opportunities."
Ottenhoff also had words of gratitude for the Knights who made up her first team as Calvin's head coach this fall. "I am thankful for this group of women," said Ottenhoff. "They have bought in to what our coaching staff is trying to do with this program. I specifically want to highlight our senior group whom have led with a servant mentality all season. They will have left this program better than they found it and that's all we can ask for."
Calvin's senior class this year included: Cierra Geyer (Titusville, Fl./Titusville HS), Kali Mouw (Avon, N.Y./Avon Central HS), Bekah Maquire (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS), Rebecca Hull (Mason, Mich./Lansing Christian HS), Emily Van Vliet (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) and MacKenna Nesky (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS).
