HOLLAND, Mich. – The Calvin women's soccer team took on rival #9 Hope College Saturday afternoon in a conference matchup at Van Andel Soccer Stadium. The game went into double overtime as neither team was able to walk away with the win and it ended in a 1-1 draw.
Both teams came out battling with great defensive efforts as neither team was able to get on the board the first half.
With the second half underway, the Knights struck in the 53rd minute as senior Mackenna Nesky (Hudsonville, Mich. / Unity Christian) fired one from outside the 6-yard-box to put Calvin on the board. This was Nesky's sixth goal on the season.
Hope struck next in the 64th minute as Lindsey Kooy found Hilary Curry and she put one in the net to tie the game up 1-1.
As the clock ran out, the game remained tied and headed into overtime. In the overtime period, neither team was able to finish an opportunity to win as the game headed into double overtime.
Calvin and Hope had multiple scoring opportunities in double overtime, however neither team was able to finish and the game ended 1-1.
Hope outshot Calvin 12 to 2. Calvin goal keeper sophomore Amy Kliewer (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Forest Hills Northern) had 10 saves on goal.
Head Coach Emily Ottenhoff stated, "I am pleased with how our group came out to compete today and found a way to get a road result against a strong Hope side. It's really a privalabe to be part of the rivarly as it helps drive us to bring our best. We have to get back to work this week and find a way to get better."
The Knights are now 6-3-2 on the season and 1-1-1 in the MIAA.
