GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin Women's Soccer team lost to third-ranked University of Chicago 2-1 Saturday afternoon at Zuidema Field.
The Knights came out strong as sophomore Jessica Paulson (Plymouth, Mich. / Plymouth Christian) took a corner kick in the third minute and on the end of the ball was senior Mackenna Nesky (Hudsonville, Mich. / Unity Christian) with a header to put the ball in the back of the net. This was Nesky's fifth goal of the season.
In the first half of play, both keepers came up with impressive saves despite numerous scoring chances.
At the halftime break, junior Katie Donovan replaced junior Sydney Jones in the goal for the Maroons.
Both teams came out aggressive in the second half, but it was the Maroons who struck next to tie things up 1-1 in the 53rdminute as junior Hannah Watkins shot from 30 yards out and sent one high to the far post.
With a minute left of play there a was scrum inside the Knight's box and it was Chicago junior Nicole Willing who collected the loose ball and scored the game-winning goal.
The Maroons outshot the Knights 14-11. For Calvin, sophomore keeper Amy Kliewer (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Forest Hills Northern) had 8 saves on goal.
Calvin is now 5-2-1 on the season.
The Knights will open conference play against Kalamazoo College Saturday, September 29 at Zuidema Field.
