GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin women's lacrosse team faced off against Lawrence Tech University in its home opener on Wednesday night. The Knights led 4-3 at halftime, but fell 14-8 to the Blue Devils.
Calvin falls to 2-5 on the season with the loss, while Lawrence Tech improves to 8-2. The Blue Devils are a nationally-ranked NAIA program.
Calvin took a two-goal lead in the first three minutes behind unassisted goals by senior Emma Hall (Harare, Zimbabwe/Chisipite Senior School) and junior Lauryn Slachter (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian). The Blue Devils responded with two goals of their own to knot the score just over 10 minutes into the first half.
After 11 scoreless minutes, senior Amanda Davio (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) netted a goal to regain the Knights' lead. A minute later, Slachter capitalized again to make the score 4-2. With just over a minute left in the half, Lawrence Tech scored to trail by one heading into the halftime break.
The Blue Devils scored in the first minute of the second half to tie the score at four. Sophomore Emma Tilma (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and sophomore Emma Verrett (Beaver, Pa./Beaver County Christian) added a goal apiece to earn the Knights a 6-4 lead.
Lawrence Tech answered with five straight goals to lead by three. A free position goal by sophomore Allyson Mesman (Jenison, Mich./Hudsonville) broke up the Blue Devil's scoring run, but the visitors added three more goals to hold a 12-7 advantage with eight minutes left.
Slachter completed her hat trick, converting on a free position shot with just over five minutes remaining, but the Knights were unable to overcome the deficit as Lawrence Tech went on to take a six-goal victory.
The Knights held a 30-26 shots advantage in the loss, including 20 shots on goal. Both teams recorded 18 ground balls. Calvin completed 13-18 clears, while Lawrence Tech went 13-23. The Blue Devils won 13 draw controls compared to the Knights' 11.
Calvin in action on Saturday when it opens its conference season at home against Adrian College. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
