BATTLE CREEK, Mich. - Fighting through cool and rainy conditions, the Calvin women's golf team posted a third place team score of 342 strokes on the opening day of the MIAA Fall Tournament. The third place finish places Calvin in fourth place in the MIAA overall fall team standings, just two strokes behind Albion and 10 strokes clear of Alma heading into Saturday's final 18-hole role.
The 36-hole weekend tournament counts towards the MIAA's cumulative fall standings (six total rounds) and is being held at the Bedford Valley Golf Club.
Saint Mary's took first on Friday with a team score of 304 strokes to widen its overall lead in the overall fall standings by a whopping 137 strokes. Albion surged on Friday, firing a team score of 336 to inch above Calvin. The Knights picked up four strokes on Alma however as they jockey for one of the four qualifying spots for the MIAA Spring NCAA Qualifying Tournament next April.
Calvin used consistent scoring to finish in third on Friday with senior Nicole VanderYacht (Kentwood, Mich./South Christian HS) and sophomore Linnea McDonnough (Pentwater, Mich./Pentwater HS) leading the way with rounds of 84. Freshman Emma Dykhouse (Byron Center, Mich./South Christian HS) was right behind with a round of 86. Sophomore Meredith Bult (Wheaton, Il./Wheaton Academy) had an 88 and freshman Emme Darkowski (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS) a 91.
