MARSHALL, Mich. - Calvin opened its 2018 season in strong fashion, posting a team score of 347 strokes on the first day of competition at the Olivet College Kyle Campbell Invitational held at the Medalist Golf Club.
The score is a 20-stroke improvement over Calvin's day one total a year ago at the same competition.
Sophomore Meredith Bult (Wheaton, Il./Wheaton Academy) made her collegiate golf debut with a round of 85 to lead the Knights. Bult is tied for 18th place heading into Saturday's final round of play.
Freshman Emma Dykhouse (Byron Center, Mich./South Christian HS) also had a strong collegiate debut, firing a round of 86. Senior Nicole VanderYacht (Kentwood, Mich./South Christian HS) and sophomore Linnea McDonnough (Pentwater, Mich./Pentwater HS) had rounds of 88. Freshman Kaylee Hirschman (Grand Ledge, Mich./Grand Ledge HS) also made her collegiate debut in solid fashion with a round of 92.
DePauw leads the 14-team field after day one with a team score of 311. Bethel is second at 316. Calvin is tied for sixth place with North Central College.
The final round of the 36-hole tournament is scheduled to take place on Saturday.
