INDIANOLA, Ia. - Calvin saw its three-game win streak come to an end with an 84-70 defeat at Simpson College Saturday afternoon on the final day of the Simpson College Thanksgiving Classic.
The host Simpson Storm (4-1) lived up to their name by storming out to an 11-0 lead in the opening 2:45 of the game. Using a full-court pressure defense and a quick strike offensive attack, Simpson pushed the tempo throughout the game, making Calvin play catch-up from the early stages on.
Calvin (5-3) trailed 22-13 after one quarter of play but closed to within five at 38-33 late in the second quarter. Simpson used a three-point shot - one of 11 it hit on the afternoon - to take a 41-33 lead into the halftime break.
The Knights fell behind 64-54 at the end of three quarters and got no closer than eight points the rest of the way as the Storm found a way to keep putting points up on the board.
The Knights turned the ball over 20 times in the game while Simpson shot 50 percent from the floor including 40.7 percent (11 of 27) from three-point range.
Calvin was led in scoring by sophomore Gabby Timmer (Caledonia, Mich./South Christian HS) with 14 points to go with eight rebounds. Sophomore Mady Vander Zwaag (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) had 13 while sophomore Stephanie Coors (Evergreen, Co./Valor Christian HS) had 10 points and five boards.
Vander Zwaag and Timmer were both named to the all-tournament team at the conclusion of Saturday's game.

We have played a number of strong teams this month which will help us moving forward. We will take it step it by step and get ready for Trinity on Wednesday.
