Calvin Women's Basketball Wins Battle of Knights at St. Norbert Tip-Off Tournament

DEPRE, Wisc. - Calvin headed to the St. Norbert College Tip-Off where it picked up its second win of the season, defeating St. Norbert by a score 63–55.

Both teams didn't start out strong in the beginning with within the first few minutes, but then Calvin started to get hot. St. Norbert was going back and forth until the Knights went on a 9 – 2 run to take 19- 10 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Calvin came firing right out of the break with the whole team contributing. The Knights went on a 12-2 run to begin the 2nd quarter to take a 31-12 lead. St. Norbert couldn't get going on offense and Calvin was playing great defense, holding the Green Knights to six points total in the second quarter. The Knights took a 38-16 lead heading into halftime.

The start of the second half was a slow start once again for both teams. This time though it was St. Norbert cutting into Calvin's lead and making it a 47-33 game heading into the fourth quarter.

St. Norbert tried to keep cutting into Calvin's lead throughout the fourth quarter, but the Knights kept scoring. The Green Knights fell short on their comeback attempt and Calvin (2-1) came out with its second win on the season.

Senior Kara Minderhoud (Grand Rapids, MI / Covenant Christian) finished with 10 points, 4 rebounds and an assist while sophomore Gabby Timmer (Caledonia, MI / South Christian) had 16 points, 9 rebounds and an assist. The team shot 18-21 from the free throw line while also having 11 steals.

COACHES COMMENT: "I thought our defensive intensity was incredibly high for the first two-and-a-half quarters," said Calvin head coach Mark Christner. "We did a great job of keeping them out of the lane and making it challenging for them to score. We did a great job on the board too. We grew in some ways in moving the basketball. We're excited about the win tonight and excited to play a high-quality Illinois Wesleyan team in the championship game tomorrow."

UP NEXT: The Knights will face Illinois Wesleyan University in the championship game on Saturday at 3 p.m. (CST).
