The Calvin women's basketball team is set to kick off its 2019-20 campaign. The Knights will travel to Carthage College on Saturday for a game slated to start at noon (CST) in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
In the MIAA preseason coaches' poll released earlier today, the Knights were picked to finish fourth. Hope was the unanimous preseason pick to win the league with eight first place votes followed by Trine in second. Albion was picked third followed by Calvin.
Led by first-year head coach Mark Christner, the Knights are coming off a 12-14 campaign from a year ago. The Knights were 7-9 in league play last year - good for fifth place in the league standings.
Calvin will receive veteran leadership from senior guards Kara Minderhoud and Sydney Houlemard. The Knights also return leading scorer and rebounder Gabby Timmer. A 6-2 center, Timmer averaged 18.4 points and 10.7 rebounds a game while connecting on 52.8 percent of her field goal attempts. Timmer was named to the 2019 All-MIAA First Team and was later named the 2019 D3hoops.com Rookie of the Year. She has been named a preseason All-American by Women's DIII News and a preseason Honorable Mention All-American by D3hoops.com.
Timmer is part of a large group of returning sophomores that received significant playing time last year.
Calvin's home opener is scheduled for November 12 when the Knights host UW-Whitewater at 6 p.m. at Van Noord Arena. Whitewater was an NCAA III Tournament team a year ago. The Knights could face up to four teams that advanced to the 2019 NCAA III Tournament during the upcoming season.
Calvin's MIAA opener is slated for December 7 when the Knights host rival Hope at 5:30 p.m. at Van Noord Arena.
