Alma, Mich. – The Calvin women's basketball team fell to Alma College 68-63 in the first round of the MIAA Tournament on Tuesday night at Art Smith Arena.
The Scots came out controlling the ball as they took the early 5-0 lead. Freshman Gabby Timmer (Caledonia, Mich. / South Christian) started the Knights out with a run of six points as the Scots led 10-6. The two teams exchanged points and as the quarter began to close out, the Knights tightened it up to trail by one point. With under a minute in the quarter, the Scots put up a pair of three throw to lead 16-13.
With the second quarter underway, the two teams rallied back-and-forth. With Calvin trailing by one, senior Rachel Warners (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) knocked down a three-pointer as the Knights took the lead for the first time of the contest. The Scots quickly answered however to tie it up and then regained the lead. Once again, the Knights fought back and with a layup and a pair of free throws from Timmer, Calvin took back the lead 24-22. The two teams put up a few points and with Timmer on fire, she put up a triple as the Knights led by five. The Scots answered with a run of four points and as the half concluded, Calvin led 29-28.
The Scots game out strong the second half with a run of seven points to take back the lead 35-29. Alma continued to control the ball as the Scots pulled ahead by 10 points. Calvin was able to put up a fight as the two exchanged scoring flurries and as the quarter came to the close Alma led 47-40.
In the fourth quarter, Alma pulled ahead by 12 points. The Knights then made a big comeback as they trailed by three. The two teams exchanged points and with Alma up by six, senior Becca Richards (Fort Gratiot, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) scorched a triple to make it a 63-60 game with just over a minute left. Alma connected on a pair of key throws in the closing seconds as the Scots took the 68-63 win.
Leading the Knights was Timmer with 28 points and 14 rebounds making it her 12th double-double of the season. Richards recorded 14 points. Freshman Abbie Cooley (Castle Rock, Co. / Castle View) had five assists.
Interim head coach Austin Randel stated, "All year I never had to questino our teams effort and as a coach that's wonderful to see. A special thank you to our seniors for their dediction and commitment to the Calvin women's basketball program. Our family is stroneger because of them."
Suiting up for the final time for Calvin on Tuesday as seniors were Warners, Richards and Sarah Cassel.
Calvin closes out its season with a 12-14 overall record and a 7-9 MIAA record.
