Calvin was able to knock down a jump shot to regain the lead, but not for long as the Flying Dutch took back the lead and as the half concluded, Hope led 28-25.
With the third quarter underway, the two teams took turns scoring keeping it a tight ballgame. Hope leading 35-30 quickly knocked down a pair of baskets to extend its lead to 10 points. Calvin with few turnovers gave Hope the opportunity to knock down another basket to lead by five. With under a minute left of play, Calvin tried to find an opportunity to score, but was unsuccessful and Hope walked away with the 54-48 win.
Leading the Knights was Timmer with 16 points, 11 rebounds, three blocks and two steals. This was Timmer's tenth double-double of the season. Junior Kara Minderhoud (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Covenant Christian) had six points and six rebounds. Cooley and freshman Mady Vander Zwaag (Holland, Mich. / Holland Christian) recorded six points each. Senior Rachel Warners (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) had seven rebounds and three assists.
Interim head coach Austin Randel stated, "I couldn't be prouder of the effort and energy the woman gave. One of the big things we talked about before the game was composure and, in an environment where it's loud and a lot of stuff is going on, you just have to close your eyes, take a breath and be in the moment for a minute and just go and play. Now we have to continue to go to practice and go to the next game with that same focus, intensity and energy and finish out the rest of the season."
The Knights return to action on Saturday as they host Kalamazoo at 3 p.m.
