GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin women's Basketball team fell to Alma 62-51 on Monday night in a conference contest at Van Noord Arena.
This was the second meeting between the two teams this season, as the Knights fell to the Scots 84-73 in January.
Both teams came out competitive as they rallied back and forth exchanging points throughout the first quarter. Alma went on a run of six points to close out the quarter as they lead 17-10.
The Knights started out the second quarter with a triple from freshman Abbie Cooley (Castle Rock, Co. / Castle View), but the Scots answered with three triples in a row to take the 25-13 lead. Knights trailing, senior Becca Richards (Fort Gratiot, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) and freshman Baylee GalanBrowne (Evergren, Co. / Evergreen)both knocked down a three pointer to tighten the Scots lead to within three. Alma knocked down two more baskets and as the half concluded, they lead 31-24.
The Knights came out strong the third quarter as they went on a run of seven points to trail by one point. The two teams exchanged points and as the quarter closed out Alma led 37-33.
With the fourth quarter underway, the two teams battled as they exchanged points. The Scots went on a run of nine points to pull ahead 49-38. The Knights fought back and junior Kara Minderhoud (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Covenant Christian) made a crucial layup drawing a foul and knocking down the free throw to put the game to within six points. Calvin fought hard to pull out the win, but it was Alma who walked away with the 62-51 win.
Leading the Knights was freshman Gabby Timmer (Caledonia, Mich. / South Christian) with 15 points and nine rebounds. Minderhoud had nine points and 10 rebounds.
The Knights return to action on Wednesday as they travel to Hope College to face the Flying Dutch at 7:30 p.m.
