GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin women's basketball team defeated Albion 74-69 on Saturday afternoon in a conference contest at Van Noord Arena.
The Knights came out strong the first quarter with a run of eight points including two triples from senior Rachel Warners (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) to take the early lead. The Brits, making a comeback tightened things up and took over the lead 14-13. Calvin closed out the quarter with a three-pointer from Becca Richards to regain the lead 16-14.
As the second quarter started, the two teams exchanged points. As the quarter progressed, Calvin began to pull ahead and took a 14-point lead. The Brits concluded that half with a layup to trail 38-26 to the Knights.
The Knights kicked off second half with a run of six points to take the 18-point lead. The Brits fought back with a run of 11 points to tighten the Knights lead to within seven. Calvin was able to pull ahead once again to take a 12-point lead, but the Brits were able to tighten it back to within seven as the quarter closed out 53-46 with the Knights leading.
As the fourth quarter started, Calvin was able to pull ahead by 12 points once again, but the Brits quickly made a comeback going on a run of 11-points to tie the game up at 60. The Knights quickly regained the lead with two triples from freshman Stephanie Coors (Evergreen, Co. / Valor Christian) and junior Kara Minderhoud (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Covenant Christian), but the Brits responded with two three-pointers of their own to tie it back up. The two teams rallied back and forth trying to walk away the win, however it was the Knights who claimed the 74-69 lead. Freshman Gabby Timmer (Caledonia, Mich./South Christian HS) powered in a layup to give Calvin a 70-69 lead with 1:23 remaining. Coors added a clutch lay-up with 37 seconds remaining with Timmer providing the clinching points on another bucket in the paint with eight seconds remaining.
Leading the Knights (10-11 overall, 5-7 MIAA) was Timmer with 25 points and 20 rebounds. This was Timmer's ninth double-double of the season. Another leader for the Knights was Minderhoud with 15 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. Coors had 12 points and six boards with senior Rachel Warners (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) contributing 10 points and six rebounds.
Interim head coach Austin Randel stated, "I am so proud of the way the women played today. They were focused all week, and when adversity hit, they responded well and stick to the game plan. It was a great team win."
The Knights return to action on Monday for a makeup game against Alma College at 7:30 p.m.
