ANGOLA, Ind. - Calvin put up a spirited effort on the road Wednesday evening before falling to league-leading Trine 72-56.
Calvin (9-10 overall, 4-6 MIAA) fought Trine to a 16-16 tie through one quarter of play and trailed 35-28 at halftime. The Knights trailed 53-37 late in the third quarter before rattling up eight unanswered points to trail 53-45 with 7:11 left to play. Ranked 10th nationally, Trine (17-2 overall, 10-0 MIAA) answered with a 7-0 run to build a 60-45 lead and retake control of the game.
The Knights were led in defeat by junior Kara Minderhoud (Grand Rapids, Mich./Covenant Christian HS) who tossed in a team-high 15 points off the bench as she was 6 of 7 from the floor while dishing out three assists. Freshman Gabby Timmer (Caledonia, Mich./South Christian HS) notched her eighth double-double of the season with 14 points and 13 rebounds.
Freshman Baylee GalanBrowne (Evergreen, Co./Evergreen HS) had nine points and four boards. Senior Becca Richards (Fort Gratiot, Mich./Port Huron Northern HS) and freshman Stephanie Coors (Evergreen, Co./Valor Christian HS) had eight points apiece with Coors grabbing six rebounds and collecting three assists.
Brandi Dawson led Trine with 24 points and six rebounds with Cassidy Williams chipping in with 13 points.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Adrian at 3 p.m. at Van Noord Arena.
