KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Calvin women's basketball team defeated Kalamazoo 82-48 in a conference contest on Wednesday evening.
Calvin came out tough full-court pressing. The press resulted in two steals and a run of six points. Freshman Maddie Vander Zwaag (Holland, Mich. / Holland Christian) knocked down a three-pointer to put the Knights up 15-8. Kalamazoo was able to find some opportunities to break through the full-court press and knock down some points, however Calvin continued to score and the Knights closed out the quarter with the 23-13 lead.
The Knights started out the second quarter on fire as they went on a run of eight points, including a three-pointer from freshman Stephanie Coors (Evergreen, Co./Valor Christian) to take the 31-13 lead. Kalamazoo was able to put up some points, however the Knights remained dominant as they pulled into a 43-20 halftime lead.
Much like the first half, the Knights remained dominant as they started out the second half with a run of six points. Kalamazoo knocked down four points, but Vander Zwaag put up a three-pointer followed by a layup to put Calvin up by 30. The two teams exchanged points, and as the third quarter concluded, Calvin led 63-32.
Calvin continued to pull ahead throughout the fourth quarter and the Knights ran away with the 82-48 victory.
Leading the Knights in scoring were freshman Rebecca Boeve (Grandville, Mich. / Covenant Christian) and Vander Zwaag with 14 points each. Coors had 13 points and seven rebounds. Freshman Gabby Timmer (Caledonia, Mich./South Christian HS) had 11 points and six rebounds. Freshman Abbie Cooley (Castle Rock, Co. / Castle View) had six assists.
Interim head coach Austin Randal stated, "I couldn't be more proud of the effort that the women gave for four quarters. They came together, were so focused and determined and it was a great team win."
The Knights return to action on Saturday as they host St. Mary's (Ind.) at 3 p.m. for a conference contest.
