ALMA, Mich. –The Calvin women's basketball team collected an 84-73 loss to Alma in a conference contest on Saturday afternoon.
Alma came out with the early 10-2 lead, but a pair of three pointers from Calvin freshman Maddie Vander Zwaag (Holland, Mich. / Holland Christian) and Baylee GalanBrowne (Evergren, Co. / Evergreen) quickly allowed the Knights to catch up. It didn't take long for the Scots to pull ahead as they went on a run of 12 points as the first quarter closed out 29-14.
The Knights looking to make a comeback, started out the second quarter with a three-pointer by freshman Abbie Cooley (Castle Rock, Co. / Castle View) and layup by Vander Zwaag to tighten the game to within ten. Alma, using its momentum from the first quarter, quickly pulled ahead to lead 38-19. As the quarter went on, both teams exchanged points however as the Scots continued to keep their lead as the half closed out 50-29.
Calvin came out strong in the second half as it forced turnovers from the Scots and went on a run of seven points to make it a 14-point game. The Knights, on a good rhythm, continued to fight back as they made it an eight-point game trailing 54-46. After a couple of exchanged points, Alma answered with a run of seven points to take a 17-point lead. The Knights were able to knock down some points to make trail 68-55 as the third quarter concluded.
The Knights fighting for the comeback win, quickly tightened the lead to within eight points. Both teams rallied back and forth, fighting until the buzzer. However, it was the Knights who fell short as the Scots walked away with the 84-73 win.
Leading the Knights in scoring was junior Kara Minderhoud (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Covenant Christian) with 16 points. Freshman Gabby Timmer (Caledonia, Mich. / South Christian) recorded 13 points and eight rebounds. Cooley had six assists.
The Knights return to competition Wednesday as they travel to Albion College to take on the Brits at 7:30 p.m.
