ADRIAN, Mich. – The Calvin women's basketball team defeated Adrian College in a close-fitting conference contest 59-51 Wednesday night. The Knights improve to 8-5 overall and 3-1 in conference play with the win.
Adrian established the early 7-2 lead in the first quarter, but a run of nine points gave Calvin the 11-7 lead. The Bulldogs were able to put up two points, but Calvin answered with a run of five points as the quarter closed out 17-12 with the Knights on top.
The Knights started out the second quarter strong with a pair of layups from senior Becca Richards (Fort Gratiot, Mich. / Port Huron Northern)to lead 21-12. The Bulldogs rallied back with a run of six to tighten the score to within three. Calvin answered with six points to pull ahead 27-18. The Bulldogs closed out the half with four points to trail 27-22.
Calvin came out in the second half on fire putting up nine points early on to pull ahead 36-24. The Knights knocked down six free throws in a row as they lengthened their lead 44-30. The Bulldogs closed out the quarter with three points to tighten the score to within 11 points.
Looking to make a comeback, Adrian started out the fourth quarter with a run of six points as it tightened Calvin's lead to within five. Both teams rallied back and forth trying to close out with the win. With Calvin up by nine with under three minutes to go, the Bulldogs fought hard to pull out the win, but crucial free throws knocked down by senior Rachel Warners (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) and freshman Gabby Timmer (Caledonia, Mich. / South Christian) helped the Knights close out the contest 59-51.
Timmer lead the Knights with 21 points, 16 rebounds, and three assists. This was Timmer's sixth double-double of the season.
Calvin made 17 out 22 free throws to help claim the win. Warners was eight for eight at the line as she tallied 10 points overall.
The Knights return to competition Saturday as they travel to Alma College to take on the Scots at 3 p.m.
