LIMA, Oh. - A late second-quarter surge propelled the Calvin women's basketball team to an 87-63 non-conference victory at Northwestern of Ohio Friday night.
Calvin used a 17-5 run over the final 4:08 of the second quarter to take a 38-28 halftime lead. Calvin hit five three-pointers in the run highlighted by a 28-foot heave by senior Rachel Warners (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) at the buzzer.
The Knights (7-5) then scored the first seven points of the second half and never looked back to pull away for the win.
Warners poured in 29 points to go with 13 rebounds as she notched her first collegiate double-double. Her point and rebound totals were both career-highs. Warners was 11-for-16 from the floor and connected on both of her three-point attempts in the win.
Freshman Stephanie Coors (Evergreen, Co./Valor Christian HS) dropped in 13 points while grabbing five rebounds and dishing out three assists. Coors had three triples - all of which came in the first half. Freshman Gabby Timmer (Caledonia, Mich./South Christian HS) had 11 points and 12 rebounds to notch her fifth double-double of the season.
Senior Becca Richards (Fort Gratiot, Mich./Port Huron Northern HS) had 12 points including a pair of triples. Freshman point guard Abbie Cooley (Castle Rock, Co./Castle View HS) had a strong floor game with five points, five rebounds and four assists while turning the ball over just twice.
Freshman Maddie Vander Zwaag (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) had nine points and four assists and connected on a three-point basket.
Vander Zwaag was one of five freshmen in the starting lineup. Also starting in Friday's game were Cooley, Coors, Baylee GalanBrowne (Evergreen, Co./Evergreen HS) and Timmer. It marked the first time that Calvin has opened a game with five freshmen in the starting lineup.
Calvin shot 52.5 percent from the floor as a team including 72 percent in the second half. The Knights were 8 of 16 (.500) from three-point range.
Northwestern (6-10) was led by Emily Patton with 23 points.
Calvin returns to action next Wednesday when it travels to Adrian for a 7:30 p.m. MIAA contest.
