GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin women's basketball team defeated Finlandia 62-56 in a non-conference contest on Wednesday evening at Van Noord Arena.
Both teams came out competitive as they exchanged points keeping it a tight score throughout the first quarter. Knights down by four, a 3-point shot by senior Becca Richards (Fort Gratiot, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) tightened the score. A pair of layups by freshman Baylee Galanbrowne (Evergren, Co. / Evergreen) and freshman Gabby Timmer (Caledonia, Mich. / South Christian) gave the Knights the lead as they closed out the quarter with the 19-16 lead.
Calvin started out the second quarter with a run of six points to lengthen the lead 25-16. The Lions fought back tightening the score to within three, but a made free throw by Timmer and jump shot by Galanbrowne closed out the half with the Knights leading 35-29.
The Knights came out strong the second half with a pair of layups to take the 10-point lead. The Lions fought back throughout the quarter to tie it up 46-46. A foul on the Lions brought Galanbrowne to the line and she made one shot to end the third quarter with the one-point lead.
Both teams battled in the 4thquarter. A run a five gave Calvin a 54-48 lead. The Lions put up a layup, but Calvin went on a run of six to take the 10-point lead. Finlandia battled back but fell short as the Knights ran away with it 62-56.
Leading the Knights was Timmer with 11 rebounds, four blocks, and 27 points. Another leader for the Knights was Galanbrowne with two assists and 12 points.
Calvin improves their record to 3-3 overall.
The Knights will head to Saint Mary's (Ind.) Saturday at 3 p.m. to kick off conference play.
