GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin women's basketball team fell to Carthage 72-49 Tuesday night at Van Noord arena in a non-conference match.
Both teams came out strong in the beginning of the first quarter keeping it a tight score. Carthage pulled ahead 14-8, but junior Kara Minderhoud (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Covenant Christian) drew a foul on a made layup, follewd by a made free throw to tighten the score to within one. A three-point basket by Carthage put the Lady Reds up by four as the first quarter closed out.
Carthage came out on fire the second quarter with a three-point to take the lead 20-13. A run of six points by Calvin tightened the score up to within one. The Lady Reds put up a jump shot, but a couple of layups by the Knights put them up by one. Both teams exchanged points for the remainder of the quarter as the first half closed out 33-31 with Calvin trailing by two.
Carthage outscored Calvin 23-5 in the third quarter to pull away and take it 72-49.
Leading the Knights was freshman Gabby Timmer (Caledonia, Mich./ South Christian) with 17 points, 14 rebounds, and four blocks. Other leaders for the Knights were freshman Stephanie Coors (Evergreen, Co./ Valor Christian) and senior Becca Richards (Fort Gratiot, Mich./ Port Huron Northern) with nine points and four rebounds each. Freshman Maddie Vander Zwaag (Holland, Mich./ Holland Christian) recorded seven points and six rebounds.
The Knights recorded a total of 42 rebounds and 22 turnovers. Calvin returns to action Wednesday, November 28th when it hosts Finlandia at 6 p.m.
