ADRIAN, Mich. – The Knights sprinted out to an early lead on Saturday and never looked back. Calvin improved to 13-7 and 8-3 in the MIAA with a 77-48 victory. The Knights outscored Adrian in all four quarters.

"The ESPY Awards need to include some kind of Grit Award for a group that stands in the face of adversity," said Calvin head coach Chuck Winkelman. "This team has done that and competes at a high level against national championship level competition. We might not be a Final Four level team, but we have the heart of one."

The Maroon and Gold opened the game on an 8-0 run in the first two minutes. The Knights featured a balanced attack in the run with sophomore Kara Minderhoud (Grand Rapids, Mich./Covenant Christian), senior Ali Spayde (Lewis Center, Ohio/Worthington Christian), junior Becca Richard (Fort Gratiot, Mich./Port Huron Northern) and sophomore Nicole Meyer (Macomb, Mich./Eisenhower) all scoring.

The Knights kept their foot on the acceleration and led 25-8 after the first quarter.

Calvin cruised on a 5-0 run to start the second quarter. The Knights pushed the lead up to 48-20 with a jump shot from freshman Caitlyn Demaree (St. Louis, Mo./Principia). The Maroon and Gold went into halftime with a 48-25 lead.

The Bulldogs took a bite out of the Calvin lead with a 9-2 run to start the third quarter. Leading 54-40, Calvin closed the final three minutes of the quarter on a 10-0 run, anchored by five points from Ali Spayde.

The two teams exchanged baskets for a majority of the fourth quarter, with Adrian cutting the lead to 22 points with six minutes remaining. The Knights held Adrian to only eight points in the quarter. Sophomore Jordyn Schluter (Novi, Mich./Mercy) and sophomore Alexus Thomas (Little Rock, Ark./Little Rock Christian Academy) both scored their first career points at Calvin in the fourth quarter.

The Knights held Adrian to single-digit scoring in three of the eight quarters they played this year.

Saturday marked the first career double-double for Nicole Meyer with a career-high 12 points and 12 rebounds. She also led Calvin with two blocks and two steals.

Ali Spayde led all players with 26 points and picked up eight rebounds and seven assists.

Bre Luurtsema and Kara Minderhoud both finished with 10 points.

Caitlyn Demaree added nine points from the bench.

Junior Logan Winton (Fairview, Mich./Fairview) recorded a career-high eight rebounds in the win.
