Calvin Softball Set to Face MSOE In NCAA III Tournament Thursday Afternoon

The Calvin softball team will face Milwaukee School of Engineering in a first round NCAA III Tournament game Thursday afternoon at noon (CST) on the campus of Illinois Wesleyan University.

Calvin will enter the game ranked 25th in the latest NFCA Division III Top 25 poll. The Knights are back in the national poll for the first time since late March.

Calvin (29-8) is making its second straight NCAA III Tournament appearance. Calvin and MSOE (33-10) are joined in the four-team NCAA III Regional by seventh-ranked Illinois Wesleyan (33-7) and Otterbein (24-15).

Freshman Hannah Biddlecome is leading Calvin in batting average at .408 clip. Junior Hannah Horvath is batting .373 with a team-leading 35 runs and 17 stolen bases. Junior Abi Colon has a team-leading 40 RBI and nine home runs. Sophomore catcher Grace Stock is hitting .388 with 35 RBI and a Calvin single-season record 16 doubles. Senior Maddie DeGroot is batting .336 with 29 RBI. She is Calvin's career leader in base hits (198), at bats (535) and runs scored (126).

In the pitching circle, sophomore Ellie Borst is 14-4 with a 1.94 earned run average. She has 107 strikeouts. Senior Anna Gernant is 9-4 in the circle with a 3.36 earned run average. Gernant is second on the Calvin career list in strikeouts (668), third in victories (51) and fourth in innings pitched (473). Sophomore Bri Leegwater is also 5-0 in the circle this spring for the Knights.

Calvin advanced to the NCAA III Tournament by winning the MIAA Tournament title last weekend. The title was Calvin's first since 1997.

Milwaukee School of Engineering advanced to the NCAA III Tournament by winning the NACC Tournament title this past weekend. The Raiders will carry a 16-game win streak into NCAA III Tournament play.

The Raiders are led at the plate by Amanda Manssen who is hitting .441 with 64 hits and 39 RBI. Emily Snow and Rachel Ziemba are both hitting at a .407 clip. Lauren Stefanczyk is also hitting .399 with 32 RBI and 19 doubles.

Lorrin Pondo is the top pitcher for Milwaukee School of Engineering, fashioning a won-loss record of 18-4 with a 2.45 ERA. Emily Wiederholt is 9-5 with a 1.87 ERA and a team-leading 98 strikeouts.
