Softball Splits on Final Day of Florida Trip

CLERMONT, Fla. - Calvin split its final two games in Florida, falling to Wisconsin-Whitewater 3-1 and defeating Wisconsin-Stout 5-1.

The Knights head home to Michigan with an 8-4 overall record.

GAME ONE
UW-Whitewater 3, Calvin 1

Whitewater scored two in the second and one in the third to provide all the run support it would need. Calvin's lone run came in the top of the third as senior Maddie DeGroot (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) doubled home junior Hannah Horvath (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia HS). DeGroot finished the game with two hits. Senior Anna Gernant (West Des Moines, Ia./Valley HS) and sophomore Bri Leegwater (Zeeland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) split time in the circle with Gernant taking the loss.

GAME TWO
Calvin 5, UW-Stout 1

Junior Abi Colon (Caledonia, Mich./South Christian HS) had a monster game, driving in a run with a single in the third and then blasting a grand-slam in the fifth as the Knights concluded their spring trip on a winning note.

Colon had two of Calvin's seven hits. Sophomore Ellie Borst (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) went the distance to pick up the win, striking out six and walking five.

COACHES QUOTE: "We facd two high quality opponents today and it was nice to finish our spring trip with a win," said Calvin head softball coach Becky Hilgert. "I am proud of the tough schedule we played as I believed it will prepare us to dive head first into our conference schedule next week. We certainly have things to clean up and work on but I think at times we showed glimpses of the kind of we we are capable of being this season. We will take a few well-deserved days off and get back to it on Monday."

NEXT UP: Calvin will host Wheaton in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at the Gainey Athletic Complex.
