Calvin Softball Set to Open Its Season Against Franklin

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin women's softball team opens its season on Tuesday afternoon against Franklin College for a non-conference double header at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.

The Teams: The Grizzlies are 0-1 overall. The Knights bring an 0-0 overall record into the competition. 

The Coaches: Brad Jones is the head coach of Franklin's women's Softball program.

Becky Hilgert is in her third season as the head coach of the Calvin women's softball program. Hilgert led the Knights to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 20 years in 2018. The Knights finished the year with a 32-10 record and advanced to the NCAA Regional Finals.From 2014-2016, Hilgert served as assistant coach for the Calvin softball program. A native of Bloomington, Minnesota, Hilgert is a graduate of the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota. At St. Thomas, she was a four-year starter in the infield for the Tommie softball team that won three MIAC Championships and made four consecutive NCAA Division III Tournament appearances. Hilgert graduated from St. Thomas with a bachelor's degree in political science while holding a minor in communications. She completed her Master's of Science degree in recreation and sports sciences with an emphasis in coaching education at Ohio University in 2016.

The Players: For the Grizzlies, Monica Collins leads the team with three RBI's, three runs and .750 batting average. 

The Knights are led by four seniors. Rachel Borden, Anna Gernant, Kristen Newman and Maddie DeGroot
