EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Calvin men's Cross Country team finished in fifth place out of a 24 team spread at the MSU Spartan Invitational on Friday afternoon.
Leading the Knights through the 8k course was junior Jonathan Ellis (Baltimore, Md. / Towson) with an 11th place finish time of 25:19.4. Senior Tyler Johnson (Springfield, Ill. / Pleasant Plains) finished next with a 25:49.7.
Packing it up to finish next to each other was senior Caleb Furguson (Naperville, Ill. / Neuqua Valley) with a 25:59.7 and junior Justin Varineau (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) with a 26:02.4.
Rounding out scoring for the Knights was senior Addison Smith (Seoul, South Korea / Seoul Foreign School) with a time of 26:15.5.
Head Coach Brian Diemer stated, "Jonathn Ellis ran a tremendous race. It was really brilliant. He ran in the top chase pack and settled in well. He was very strong. He shows that he can be quite good at a national caliber level. That was good to see and a big jump from last week. Caleb Ferguson ran a nice race. We needed that from him. He ran with good focus and confidence. Justin Varineau and Addison Smith had solid races. We also had a strong freshman run from Coleton Jensen. That is exciting. He shows he has a nice aggressive race strategy. He is going to be able to help us. We don't have many races on our schedule but the races we do have are important races. These things have to mean something. Have to make some good steps and progress. That's happening. Now we have a nice break in our schedule. We have three weeks to do some specific training. I am excited about that opportunity and building towards our next race."
The Knights return to action on Friday, October 4th as they compete in the Notre Dame Invitational at 4 p.m.
