GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Calvin College Men's Cross Country opened its season today hosting the Knights Invite. The Knights dominated the field of 27 teams and defended their team title with a score of 56 points.
Coming in second place was Saginaw valley State University (136 points) and clenching the third-place spot was Madonna University (153 points).
Saginaw Valley senior, Tom Goforth was the men's individual 8k winner with a time of 24:54.4.
Coming in first for the Knights and finishing fifth overall was junior Tyler Johnson (Springfield, Ill. Pleasant Plains) with a time of 25:25.7. Sophomores Jonathan Ellis (Baltimore, Md. / Towson) and Justin Varineau (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) packed it up to clench a top ten finish running times of 25:32.0 and 25:33.0.
Finishing out the top five for the Knights were junior Caleb Ferguson (Naperville, Ill. / Neuqua Valley) with a time of 25:51.7 and junior Jacob Pettinga (Saugatuck, Mich. /Saugatuck) with a time 26:13.2.
Also competing for Calvin was Addison Smith (Seoul, South Korea / Seoul Foreign School), Micah Meindertsma (Caledonia Mich. / Caledonia), Jamison Koeman (Whitinsville, Mass. / Whitinsville Christian), Noah Cummisford (Mequon, Wis. / Homestead), Jason Klaassen (Jenison, Mich. / Unity Christian), Jack Randall (Hopkinton, Mass. Whitinsivlle Christian) and Fredrick McWain (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Catholic Central).
Head Coach, Brian Diemer touched on the men's first place finish. "I'm really pleased with the determination, they ran like a championship team. They packed it up in the front and for most of the race we had five to six guys running up in the top ten and just going for it and they are a determined squad this year."
The Knights will travel to East Lansing, Mich. Friday to compete at the Michigan State Spartan Invitational. The men's race will begin at 11:40 a.m.
