Mount Pleasant, Mich. – The Calvin men's track and field team took third place in the Jack Skoog Open on Friday evening.
Winning the meet was Alma College with 98 points. Coming in second was Olivet College with 86 points, followed by Calvin with 79 points.
Calvin had a handful of top performances in the D3 events.
The Calvin men dominated the 3000 meter run claiming the top eight spots. Leading the pack was Sophomore Justin Varineau (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) who crossed the line with a time of 8:44.10. Coming in second was junior Caleb Ferguson (Naperville, Ill. / Neuqua Valley) with an 8:50.50 followed by Sophomore Jonathon Ellis (Baltimore, Md. / Towson) with an 8:52.11.
Claiming the top spot in the mile was junior Tyler Johnson (Springfield, Ill. / Pleasant Plains)with a time of 4.26.11 finishing nine seconds ahead of second place Alma's Justin Jones. Finishing in the third and fourth place spots was Calvin's freshman Morrison Ismond with a time of 4:37.89 and sophomore Noah Cummisford (Mequon, Wis. / Homestead)with a time of 4:46.52.
Senior Alex Williams (Mequon, Wis. / Homestead) raced to a second-place finish in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 9.24.
Another second-place finish recorded was from freshman Harold Gee in the 400 meters with a time of 56.43.
Freshman Joshua King recorded a second-place finish in the 60 meter dash crossing the line in a time of 7.41.
A duo of Calvin seniors claimed the top two spots in the 800 meters. Finishing in first was James Jeninga (Brookfield, Wis. / Milwaukee Lutheran) with a 1:57.44 followed by Luke Peterson (Holland, Mich. / Holland Christian) with a 2:01.61.
Claiming the third spot in the long Jump was junior Nathan Van Wyhe (Frankfort, Ill. / Lincoln-Way East) with a jump of 5.87m.
Juniors Jordan Jorritsma (Holland, Mich. / Holland Christian)and Jayvin Wolfe (Middleton, Mich. / Fulton) claimed the second and third place spots in the men's shot put. Jorritsma threw a 13.44m and Wolfe recorded a 12.48m.
Winning the weight throw was sophomore Bryce Reynolds with a heave of 14.79m.
Calvin returns to action next Saturday as the Knights compete in the GVSU Mike Lints Invitational.
