ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Calvin men's track and field team took eighth place at the Al Owens Classic hosted by Grand Valley State University with a team score of 35 points.
Senior Matt Boelens (Bolton, Mass./Nashoba Regional HS) was Calvin's lone winner, capturing first place in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a season-best time of 9:38.70.
Junior Jamison Koeman (Whitinsville, Mass./Whitinsville Christian HS) had one of of Calvin's top finishes, placing fourth in the 5,000 meter run with a season-best time of 14:58.74.
Calvin also picked up points in the 800 meters as senior Noah Buteyn (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was seventh (1:55.10) and junior James Jeninga (Brookfield, Wisc./Wisconsin Lutheran HS) eighth (1:55.14). Junior Luke Peterson (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) was close behind in 11th with a time of 1:55.85.
In the 800 meters, senior Ethan Valentine (Mason, Oh./William Mason HS) was eighth with a time of 49.86.
Sophomore Sam Veenstra (North Haledon, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) was 11th in the 400 meter hurdles (57.16).
Buteyn, Peterson, Jeninga and Valentine placed seventh in the 4x400 meter relay (3:22.24).
In the throws, sophomore Jayvin Wolfe (Middleton, Mich./Fulton HS) was eighth (44-11 3/4) while junior Brendan VanHouten (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was 12th (43-5 1/4) and freshman Bryce Reynolds (Byron Center, Mich./South Christian HS) was 13th (43-0 1/4).
VanHouten also placed sixth in the discus throw (152-11).
Calvin will now prepare to compete at its own Calvin Tune-Up Invitational next Friday and Saturday.
