GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin improved to 10-7 overall and to 3-2 in conference play with a 9-0 victory over visiting Olivet Saturday afternoon at the Strikwerda Tennis Courts.
The Knights are in third place in the MIAA standings heading into a key final regular season stretch that includes road trips to Adrian and Trine.
Calvin rolled out to a 3-0 edge by winning all three doubles points. Senior Jason Wolters (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) and junior Owen Brookhouse (Whitinsville, Mass./Whitinsville Christian HS) were 8-0 winners at No. 1 doubles while freshman Konner Shapiro and junior Kyrus Tsai (Glenview, Il./Glenbrook South HS) were 8-2 winners at No. 2 doubles. Senior Jose Larrea (Caracas, Venezuela/U.E. Colegio San Jose) picked up a win at No. 3 doubles by default.
At No. 1 singles, Larrea defeated Ben Morrow 6-0, 6-1. Sophomore Max Stallings (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North HS) defeated Tyler Nobel 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Senior Charlie Fahr (Milwaukee, Wisc./Wauwatosa East HS) toppled Dan Doyle 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. Junior Cobe Benzel (San Dimas, Ca./San Dimas HS) then dropped Austin Briggs 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles while freshman Brandon Johnson (Midland, Mich./Midland HS) defeated Kayleb Bradley 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles. Junior Daniel Huan (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was a winner at No. 6 singles by default.
Calvin will now prepare to travel to Adrian on Wednesday for a key 4 p.m. conference match.
