GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin opened its 2019 MIAA campaign with an 8-1 victory over Albion Friday afternoon at the Strikwerda Tennis Courts.
The Knights improve to 7-5 overall.
Calvin swept the doubles action with Jose' Larrea (Carracas, Venezuela/U.E. Colegio San Jose) and sophomore Max Stallings (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North High School) teaming up for an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles. Senior Jason Wolters (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) and junior Owen Brookhouse (Whitinsville, Mass./Whitinsville Christian HS) were 8-2 winners at No. 2 doubles while senior Charlie Fahr (Milwaukee, Wisc./Wauwatosa East HS) and junior Cobe Benzel (San Dimas, Ca./San Dimas HS) were 8-2 winners at No. 3 doubles.
Wolters rang up a 6-3, 6-1 win over Nick Kinachtchouk at No. 2 singles. Stallings dropped Robert Joerg 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. Freshman Konner Shapiro (Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington South HS) kept up his hot streak with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Israel Trevino at No. 4 singles.
Freshman Brandon Johnson (Midland, Mich./Midland HS) won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 singles over Tom Shngoo. Brookhouse defeated Patrick Smoker 6-0 6-2 at No. 6 singles.
"It was a good way to start out our conference schedule," said Calvin men's tennis coach John Ross. "We received contributions from a number of different players today which was good to see. We have some tough matches coming up so it's back to work tomorrow."
Calvin will travel to Kalamazoo next Wednesday for a 4 p.m. match.
