Calvin opened its 2019-20 season by hosting a non-conference dual meet against Division II Grand Valley State University.
Grand Valley entered the meet ranked fifth in Division II while Calvin came in ranked 15th in Division III.
At the conclusion of the evening, the visiting Lakers swam away with a 149-86 victory.
Junior Julian Iturbe (Caracas, Venezuela/Colegio Emil Friedman) highlighted the meet for Calvin by winning the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:39.27 that currently is the top time in Division III by a two-second margin.
Iturbe also took second in the 500 freestyle in a time of 4:49.20 with teammate Tim Randall (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) taking third in a time of 5:03.54.
Calvin had a big night in the freestyle swims as sophomore Noah Holstege (Charlottesville, Va./the Covenant School) took first in the 50 freestyle (21.49) while freshman Jacob Heeres (Zeeland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) blasted his way to a first place time of 47.13 in the 100 freestyle. The time by Holstege currently ranks fourth nationally while the time by Heeres ranks fifth.
In the 100 breaststroke, senior Sam Holstege (Keswick, Va./The Covenant School) was second (1:03.22) while freshman Julien Camy (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was second in the 100 butterfly (52.25).
Calvin will host the MIAA Relays next Friday at 6 p.m. inside the Venema Aquatic Center.
