Calvin Men's Swimming and Diving Captures First Place at Calvin Quad Invitational

Calvin captured first place at its own Calvin Quad Invitational this weekend inside the Venema Aquatic Center.

Over the two-day competition, Calvin posted a first place team score of 916 points, finishing 52 points ahead of second place Albion.

The Knights posted a number of first and second place finishes over the weekend to help pile up points.

Sophomore Julian Iturbue (Caracas, Venezuela/Colegio Academy) was a catalyst for Calvin, winning the 500 freestyle (4:45.64), 400 IM (4:13.35) and 100 freestyle (46.77). Senior Ben Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant HS) was another big winner for Calvin, taking first place in the 200 backstroke (1:54.71), 200 IM (1:54.84) and 100 backstroke (50.10).

Junior Tim Randall (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) won the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:46.53.

Calvin's 800 freestyle relay of Iturbue, Randall, junior Fear Churchwell (Athens, Ga./Clarke Central HS) and senior Nate Olberding (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville HS) took first placce in a time of 7:07.10. Iturbe led off the relay with an impressive time of 1:43.10.

In the 400 freestyle relay, senior Jared Britton (Falls Church, Va./Chesapeake HS), Ben Holstege, freshman Trevor Sparks (Otsego, Mich./Otsego HS) and Iturbue cruised to a first place swim of 3:08.48. Calvin took first place in four relays overall.

Its 200 medley relay of Ben Holstege, sophomore Sam Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant HS), Britton and Iturbue took first place in a time of 1:33.90. Its 200 freestyle relay team of freshman Noah Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant HS), Ben Holstege, Britton and Iturbe cruised to a win in a time of 1:24.07.

In the 1650 freestyle, junior Brian Goins (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) took second in a time off 17:34.74. Britton was second in the 100 freestyle with a time of 47.91. Olberding was second in the 200 butterfly (2:02.52).

"We had a great effort by our entire program all weekend," said Calvin head swim coach Dan Gelderloos. "What impressed me the most was the attention to detail everyone had to get through the weekend. Our teamwork on deck was at a high level, and finally, the motivation to score points for Calvin was awesome to see."

Ranked 17th nationally, Calvin will now break until next Saturday when it travels to Wheaton for a non-conference dual meet slated to start at 2 p.m. (EST).
