No. 25 Men’s Swimming & Diving Dominate Dutchmen on Senior Day

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The No. 25 ranked Calvin men's swimming & diving closed the regular season with a 195-103 victory over arch-rival Hope. The Knights won 12 of the 16 events on Saturday. The win moves Calvin to 4-1 on the year in MIAA competition.

"Today was a great way to send our seniors out," said head coach Dan Gelderloos. "We wanted to get back to being strategic in our swims. We wanted to perform for our crowd and we wanted to use the rivalry to find every little bit of speed, I felt that we succeeded."

The Knights started the day with a victory in the 400-yard medley relay. The team of junior Ben Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant), senior Tanner Vincent (Novi, Mich./Novi), freshman Lucas Holcombe (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) and senior Max DeYoung (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forrest Hills Eastern) won at 3:33.37.

The Knights kept the good times rolling in the 1650-yard freestyle. Freshman Julian Iturbe (Caracas, Venezuela/Colegio Emil Friedman) won the race at 17:20.17. In second place was sophomore Brian Goins (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams) at 17:34.47.

Sophomore Tim Randall (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) was victorious in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:47.48.

Junior Skyler Fish (Ionia, Mich./Ionia) reeled in the victory in the 200-yard backstroke at 53.63. Freshman Levi Nelesen (Zeeland, Mich./Holland Christian) finished in second place at 55.52.

The Knights brought out the broom in the 100-yard breaststroke. Sophomore Tristan Hazlett (Lutz, Fla./Home School) had a winning time of 1:01.63. Sophomore Sam Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant) placed second at 1:02.15, sophomore Gabriel Kirk (Irvine, Calif./University) finished in third place at 1:03.65 and sophomore Jacob Deysher (Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer Ridge) was in fourth place at 1:06.50.

The 50-yard freestyle saw the broom make its second appearance of the day against the Dutchmen. Julian Iturbe recorded his second victory of the day at 21.79. Tristen Hazlett took second at 22.22; in third place was junior Jacob Lensing (Pella, Iowa/Pella Christian) at 22.38. Junior Nathan Olberding (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) completed the sweep at 22.45.

Ben Holstege touched the wall first in the 100-yard freestyle at 46.41. He also won the 200 individual medley race at 1:58.79.

Sophomore Fear Churchwell (Athens, Ga./Clarke Central) put fear in the eyes of the Dutchmen on Saturday. Churchwell led the Saturday sweep in the 200-yard breaststroke at 2:19.74. Gabriel Kirk was in second place at 2:21.74. The bronze swim went to sophomore Nick Pecoraro (Chicago, Ill./Nazareth Academy) at 2:26.52. Sam Holstege recorded a fourth-place time of 2:26.54.

In the 500-yard freestyle, Brian Goins won with a time of 5:02.43. Freshman Ryan Ruba (Ludington, Mich./Ludington) touched the wall at 5:03.17 in second place.

Senior Michael Moentmann (Solon, Ohio/Solon) celebrated senior day with a first-place finish on the 3-meter boards at 298.05 points.

The Knights put the final nail in the coffin with a sweep of the 400-yard medley relay. The team of Julian Iturbe, Nathan Olberding, Tim Randall and Max DeYoung won at 3:12.54.

The Knights will return to action on Feb. 21 for the four-day MIAA Swimming & Diving Championships at the Venema Aquatic Center.
