TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Calvin men's swimming & diving team fell short on the road on Friday night at Rose Hulman. The Knights won 10 of the 16 events on Friday but fell to the Fightin' Engineers 152-148.
"I thought that everyone raced much better than a week ago," said head coach Dan Gelderloos. "Which is a good sign. The men's team lost to a very deep team. There are not many times that you get first in 10 of 16 events and don't win."
Calvin started the day with a first-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of junior Ben Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant), sophomore Sam Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant), junior Jared Britton (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) and junior Jacob Lensing (Pella, Iowa/Pella Christian) won at 1:35.38.
Freshman Julian Iturbe (Caracas, Venezuela / Colegio Emil Friedman) notched a victory in the 1000-yard freestyle at 9:55.30.
In the 100-yard backstroke, Ben Holstege earned the victory at 52.15.
Senior Tanner Vincent (Novi, Mich./Novi) touched the wall first in the 200-yard butterfly at 1:58.10.
Jared Britton kept the winning ways rolling in the 50-yard freestyle at 21.83.
Ben Holstege recorded a victory in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 47.56.
The Fightin' Engineers won three-straight races, including a close race in the 500-yard freestyle where sophomore Tim Randall (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) was edged by .09 seconds.
Jared Britton snapped the streak with a victory in the 100-yard butterfly at 52.25.
Senior Michael Moentmann (Solon, Ohio/Solon) won on both boards on Friday. He recorded a score of 315.23 on the 1-meter and 305.10 on the 3-meter.
The Knights closed the evening with a victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The team of Ben Holstege, Julian Iturbe, senior Max DeYoung (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern) and Jared Britton won at 3:09.78.
The Knights return to action on Saturday in split action. The Knights host Alma College and travel to Franklin to face Franklin and DePauw.
