GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – For the fifth consecutive year, Calvin advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament by defeating St. Norbert 3-1 Saturday afternoon in a second round tournament game at Eagles Stadium on the campus of Grand Rapids Christian High School.
The second round of the NCAA Tournament started with Calvin getting on the board first against St. Norbert. After not scoring in their last two matches, the Knights came out firing in the first half. Senior Hunter Olson (Canton, MI / Canton), scored the first goal within the first few minutes of the match from a pass from freshman Justin Wojcik (Canton, MI/Plymouth). Calvin came right back down the field shortly after its first goal with sophomore Sam Twigg (Auckland, New Zealand / New Zealand HS) putting another in the back of the net with Justin Wojcik getting his second assist of the match.
The Knights (21-1-1) didn't stop the scoring in the first half with a great cross from sophomore Quinn Loosle (Canton, MI / Canton) that Twigg redirected into the back of the net for his second goal of the match. St. Norbert (16-5-2) got right back into the game with a quick goal before the half ended.
The second half of the game was more of a defensive battle with St. Norbert bringing a lot of pressure. The Green Knights had some close attempts, but the Knights held them off the rest of the way to take the victory.
Junior Chris Morrish (Brandenton, FL / Saint Stephen's Episcopal School) had a strong game including a standout save in the second half that prevented a St. Norbert goal. Calvin outshot St. Norbert 16-6 while also beating them out on corner kicks 5-0.
COACHES COMMENTS: "Good to get a win," said Calvin men's soccer head coach Ryan Souders. "We could have a few more goals, but credit to St. Norbert for keeping this game close. I thought our backline, led by Drew Van Andel, held great and kept them at bay. Sam Twigg put a couple away for us and it is just great to get a win."
UP NEXT: The Knights will advance to the 3rd round of the NCAA Tournament where they will play host North Park in a 4:30 p.m. (EST) match on Friday. North Park (16-4-2) will host a four-team Friday/Saturday sectional with Ohio Wesleyan (15-5-3) facing Luther College (17-4-2) in the opening Friday game at 2 p.m. (EST). Teams advancing out of Friday will play in the national quarterfinal game at North Park at 4 p.m. (EST).
