GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin stretched its winning streak to 12 games and remained unbeaten in conference play with a 3-1 victory over the visiting Thunder of Trine University Saturday evening at Zuidema Field.
Ranked third nationally, Calvin (13-1-0 overall, 2-0-0 MIAA) grabbed a 2-0 lead on first half goals from seniors Jacob Lyon (Holt, Mich./Lansing Christian HS) and Dillon Weldy (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS). The goial from Lyon came in the 12th minute on an assist from freshman Aguma Muhumuza (Baton Rouge, La./The Dunham School). Weldy scored in the 16th minute on a double assist from senior Ian Adams (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and sophomore Sam Twigg (Auckland, New Zealand HS). The assist by Adams was his team-leading 14th of the season.
Trine (4-6-0 overall, 0-2-0 MIAA) sliced the deficit in half with just 1:40 left in the first half as Beau Hill cranked a rebound shot that deflected off a defender and into the Calvin goal.
Looking for breathing room against a dug-in Trine defense, the Knights found daylight in the 69th minute as Muhumuza slammed in a shot from close range on feeds from junior Drew Van Andel (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven HS) and freshman Justin Wojcik (Canton, Mich./Canton HS).
Calvin finished with a 13-11 shots at goal advantage. Trine was whistled for 20 fouls to the nine of Calvin.
Freshman goalkeeper Daniel Wunder (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) had two saves in posting his fourth consecutive victory as a starter in goal.
COACHES COMMENT: "It wasn't easy but we will take the three points," said Calvin men's soccer coach Ryan Souders. "Give Trine a lot of credit for making things difficult on us tonight. We found a way to get the job done. We learned some lessons and we will move on to the next game."
NEXT UP: Calvin will host Alma on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Zuidema Field.
