Calvin Men's Soccer Takes Bite out of Bulldogs With 5-1 Road Win
ADRIAN, Mich. - The Calvin men's soccer team remained unbeaten on the season with a 5-1 victory at Adrian College Saturday evening.

Ranked No. 1 nationally, Calvin improves to 13-0-1 overall and 9-0-1 in the MIAA. The Knights are 11 points clear of second place Adrian with four league match-days left on the regular season schedule.

The victory came nearly a year after Calvin had suffered a 1-0 defeat to the Bulldogs at Adrian's Docking Stadium.

Calvin led 2-0 at halftime and received a hat-trick performance from freshman Schaeffer Smith (Columbus, Oh./Worthington Christian HS) and outshot Adrian (6-5-2 overall, 5-3-2 MIAA) 20-12.

The Knights took an early 1-0 lead on a goal by junior Jacob Witte (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) 9:19 into the match with senior Mitch Stark (South Lyon, Mich./South Lyon HS) collecting an assist on the play.

Smith then scored his first goal of the night off a feed from sophomore Ian Adams (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) with six minutes left in the first half.

Adrian's Brandon Katona scored in the 52nd minute to slice the Calvin deficit in half but sophomore Dillon Weldy (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) lashed a shot into the left hand corner of the net from in the 59th minute to allow the Knights to regain a two-goal advantage.

Smith scored unassisted in the 65th minute and completed the hat-trick with a goal in the 73rd minute on another feed from Adams to close out the scoring.

Calvin senior Nate Van Ryn (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) chalked up six saves in posting his 13th victory of the year in nets.

"It was a great team win tonight at a really tough road venue," said Calvin men's soccer coach Ryan Souders. "We've traditionally struggled at Adrian. It's a difficult place to play so to come in and get a result was huge. Our guys moved the ball well and for the most part, defended really well. We're excited to be back at home Tuesday night to take on a committed Alma side."
Calvin's home match against Alma on Tuesday night at Zuidema Field is scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m.
