Calvin Men's Soccer Team Suffers 1-0 Loss at Adrian

ADRIAN, Mich. - The 18th-ranked Calvin men's soccer team suffered a 1-0 upset loss at Adrian Saturday night at Docking Stadium.

The loss ends Calvin's remarkable 41-game MIAA regular season win streak dating back to the 2013 season.

Adrian (7-5 overall, 5-3 MIAA) scored the only goal of the game in the 18th minute as Brandon Katona was able to collect a loose ball off a long free kick into the box and slide a shot into the net.

The goal was the first that Calvin has allowed in MIAA play this year and its first goal since a 5-1 win over Aurora University on September 10.

Calvin was outshot by Adrian 5-3 as the Bulldogs came out fast.

Calvin controlled the run of play in the second half, outshooting Adrian 11-2 over the final 45 minutes. Adrian maintained a staunched defense through the second half however to post the shutout win.

Calvin had eight corner kicks including seven in the second half but were unable to capitalize.

Adrian goalkeeper Spencer Brown had six saves in the win while Calvin junior goalkeeper Nate Van Ryn (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) had one save in defeat.

"It is always difficult to win on the road," said Calvin men's soccer coach Ryan Souders. "Coach (Charlie) Edwards is an excellent coach and his team did a great job sticking to its game plan and getting a result. Adrian is a talented team and deserves credit for its effort tonight. We will have to learn from this game quickly and get back to work."

Calvin returns to action next Tuesday when it hosts rival Hope at 4 p.m. at Zuidema Field.
