GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin evened its season record at 3-3 with an 81-66 victory over Wisconsin-Whitewater Friday night at Van Noord Arena.

Friday's game marked the home opener for the Knights and the first-ever game for head coach Bill Sall at Van Noord Arena in his role as head coach of the Calvin men's basketball program.

Calvin received a career-high 38 points from senior Derrick DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich./Covenant Christian HS) who was 13 of 20 from the field as well as 12 of 14 from the line. He also grabbed nine rebounds. The Knights led 38-31 at halftime and grabbed a 45-34 lead in the opening minutes of the second half. Wisconsin-Whitewater (2-5) closed to within six at 54-48 but but the Knights began to pull away, using the offensive push from DeVries to build and then maintain a double-digit margin down the final stretch of the game.

DeVries scored 25 of his 38 points in the second half. Calvin shot 50.9 percent overall from the floor while holding Whitewater to 41.0 percent field goal shooting. Calvin held a 36-27 rebounding advantage and was 15 of 17 (.882) at the free throw line.

COACHES COMMENT: "I thought our pace was pretty good tonight," said Calvin head men's basketball coach Bill Sall. "I thought we did a good job of getting the 50-50 balls which was important. We were a little sloppy at times, some unforced turnovers that we need to clean up but overall the effort was good and the guys executed the game plan that we wanted them to do."

NEXT UP: Calvin will host defending national champion Wisconsin-Oshkosh Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. at Van Noord Arena. The game will be part of a men's/women's doubleheader with the Calvin women hosting rival Hope in the game to follow at 5:30 p.m.
