ANDERSON, Ind. - Calvin dropped an 87-81 decision at Anderson University Wednesday night.
Calvin (1-2) trailed 11-3 in the opening five minutes. The Knights later fell behind 29-22 but finished the first half on an 18-11 run to tie the game at 40 heading into the lockerroom. Junior Thad Shymanski (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was key in the late Calvin first half surge, pouring in 20 points over the opening 20 minutes.
The lead changed hands seven times in the second half with Anderson (1-1) grabbing the lead for good at 56-55 midway through the second half.
Calvin remained in close contact, trailing 70-68 with five minutes remaining. Anderson connected on a pair of clutch three-point shots - one by Maurice Knight at the 4:45 mark and the other by Austin Lyons with 2:40 remaining The triple by Knight put the Ravens up by five while the Lyons trey gave Anderson an 80-74 advantage.
A driving layup by senior Derrick DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich./Covenant Christian HS) brought the Knights within 82-79 with 56 seconds remaining but Anderson answered with three free throws to provide ample breathing room to seal the victory.
Shymanski led Calvin with a career-high 30 points on 10 of 18 shooting to go with eight rebounds. DeVries had a double-double with 25 points and 11 rebounds. Senior Alex Bos (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and sophomore Nate Minderhoud (Grand Rapids, Mich./Covenant Christian HS) had nine points apiece.
Anderson had four of its five starters in double-digits in scoring led by Malik Laffoon with 25 points.
Anderson shot 56.6 percent from the floor and was 20 of 26 (.769) from the free throw line. The Ravens were also 7 of 16 (.438) from three-point range.
Calvin shot 45.0 percent from the floor and was 20 of 23 (.870) from the free throw line.
The Knights held a commanding 43-17 rebounding edge but turned the ball over 14 times to the seven turnovers of Anderson.
Calvin returns to action next weekend when it competes at the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Classic at Cornerstone University. The Knights will open tournament play next Friday, facing Aquinas at 6 p.m.
