Men's Basketball Picked to Finish Third in MIAA Preseason Coaches' Poll

In the MIAA preseason coaches' poll released earlier today, Calvin was picked to finish third in the MIAA. Albion was picked to finish first, receiving seven first place votes followed by Trine in second place with one first place vote.

The Calvin men's basketball team is set to open its season on November 15 when the the Knights travel to Illinois Wesleyan University.

Calvin returns seven letterwinners from last year's team that finished 14-13 overall and in fourth place in the MIAA with an 8-6 conference record. Calvin returns its top three scorers in senior Derrick DeVries, junior Thad Shymanski and senior Tony DeWitte as well as its top two rebounders in DeVries and senior Alex Bos.

A 6-5 forward, DeVries averaged 17.9 points and 6.5 rebounds a game while connecting on 46.4 percent of his field goal attempts. He was named to the 2019 All-MIAA First Team and to the D3hoops.com Great Lakes All-Region Second Team. A 6-1 guard, Shymanski averaged 10.3 points and 2.4 assists per game while connecting on 38 percent of his three-point field goal attempts. A 6-2 guard, DeWitte averaged 8.7 points a game and connected on 40.2 percent of his three-point field goal attempts. A 6-6 forward, Bos averaged 5.3 points and 6.0 rebounds a game.

Under the direction of first-year head coach Bill Sall, the Knights will host Wisconsin-Whitewater in their home opener on December 6 and will host defending national champion Wisconsin-Oshkosh the following afternoon. Calvin will face five teams that reached the 2019 NCAA III Tournament over the course of the 2019-20 season.

Calvin will open its 2020 MIAA campaign on January 8 when it travels to Albion.
