Angola, IND. – The Calvin men's basketball team fell to Trine 82-78 in the MIAA Tournament Semifinal on Friday evening at the MTI Center.
The Thunder came out controlling the ball with a run of eight points to take the 8-0 lead. Sophomore Benji Kuiper (Allendale, Mich. / Covenant Christian) finally put a stop to the Thunder as he knocked down a triple. The two teams exchanged points and with Calvin down five, sophomore Thad Shymanski (Ada, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) put up a three to make it 12-10. Once again, Trine went on a run of eight points to lead 20-10. The two teams continued to rally back-and-forth and Calvin tightened it to within three. However Trine went on another run to pull ahead by 32-22. The teams exchanged points once again, but the Thunder continued to hold its lead 42-31 as the half closed out.
The Knights kicked off the second half as junior Derrick DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Covenant Christian) popped a three-pointer. Senior Austin Bykerk (Jenison, Mich. / Unity Christian) went on a run of six points to whittle Trine's lead down to 46-40. With Calvin down by six, Shymanski put up a triple to make it a three-point contest.
Sophomore Emmett Warners (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) converted a layup to make it 52-51. Trine with a foul, sent DeVries to the line and he knocked down a pair of free throws as Calvin took the lead for the first time in the game. Trine quickly answered taking back the lead.
The Thunder continued to hold its lead, but not by much as the Knights battled to keep it a close contest. With under four minutes of play, Trine started to pull ahead, however Calvin put up a fight tightening it to within five points with just over a minute left. The two teams battled until the last second, but as the clock ran out, it was Trine who took it 82-78.
Leading the Knights was DeVries with 20 points, four rebounds and three assists. Shymanski had 18 points and three assists. Fresshman Carson Meulenberg (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Covenant Christian) had 14 points, six rebounds and three assists. Junior Alex Bos (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) recorded 12 rebounds.
