Calvin Men's Basketball Set to Take on Trine in MIAA Semifinal

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin men's basketball team will travel to Trine on Friday at 3 p.m. for the MIAA Tournament Semifinal.  

The Teams: The Thunder are 18-7 overall and 11-3 in the MIAA. The Knights bring an 14-12 overall record and 8-6 MIAA record into the competition. This is the third meeting between the two teams this season. In January, Trine won 80-70 at home. Earlier in February, Calvin won 81-76 at home. 

The Coaches: Brooks Miller is in his eighth year as the head men's basketball coach at Trine University.Miller's seven-year career as head coach at Trine University has included seven consecutive top-4 MIAA finishes which culminated in seven consecutive trips to the MIAA tournament. The Thunder have posted an overall record of 105-78 under Miller's guidance including a 57-41 mark against MIAA foes. Miller's basketball career started when he was a player at the University of Toledo in Toledo, Ohio and at Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, Mich. After college, Miller worked as the head assistant men's basketball coach at Hillsdale College. He earned a Bachelor of Science in History and Physical Education from Hillsdale College and a Master's degree in Exercise Sport Science from Texas Tech University.

Kevin Vande Streek is in his 22nd year as the head men's basketball coach at Calvin College and in his 28th year as a collegiate coach overall. In 26 years as a head coach, Vande Streek has compiled an overall won-loss record of 504-260. As a coach at Calvin, he has produced a record of 411-180 and is the all-time leader for victories by a Calvin men's basketball coach. He has led Calvin to nine MIAA regular season titles, 10 trips to the NCAA Division III Tournament, two appearances in the NCAA Division III semifinals and one national championship. He attended Ripon College in Wisconsin for a year, where he played one year of varsity basketball, before transferring to Dordt in Sioux Center, Iowa, where he was a three-year varsity player. He graduated from Dordt in 1981 and went on to earn a master's degree in physical education from the University of South Dakota in 1986. 

The Players: For the Thunder, Myles Copeland leads the team with a 74.1 free throw average, a 5.0 rebound average and a 16.3 scoring average. 

For the Knights, Derek DeVries leads the team with a 26.2 three-point average, an 82.9 free throw average, a 6.6 rebound average and a 17.8 scoring average.
