OLIVET, Mich. – Calvin fell at Olivet 85-71 Saturday night in its regular season finale. The Knights finish in a three-way tie for third place with Olivet and Hope in the final MIAA standings with 8-6 conference records.
With tiebreaker actions in place, Olivet gains the third seed for next week's six-team MIAA Tournament, Calvin picks up the fourth seed and Hope the fifth seed.
Calvin will host rival Hope in a first round MIAA Tournament game Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at Van Noord Arena.
In its loss at Olivet (12-13 overall) on Saturday, Calvin (13-12 overall) fell behind 36-20 in the first half but the Knights closed out the first half with an 18-9 run to trail 45-38 at halftime.
Calvin maintained contact in the second half, trailing 68-61 after a jumper by senior Carlos Amoros-Gutierrez (Wyoming, Mich./Wyoming HS) with 6:48 remaining and 71-63 on a layup by Amoros-Gutierrez moments later.
Olivet outscored Calvin 14-8 over the final four minutes however to seal the win.
Amoros-Gutierrez poured in a career-high 22 points on 10 of 16 shooting. Senior Austin Bykerk (Jenison, Mich./Unity Christian HS) added 14 points and seven rebounds. Junior Derrick DeVries had nine points and a game-high 14 rebounds.
Wednesday's game with Hope will mark the 201st meeting between the two teams and will mark the 18th meeting between the two teams in the MIAA Tournament.
