ALMA, Mich. - Calvin exploded for a school record 19 three-pointers in racing to a 112-74 victory at Alma Monday night.
The Knights finished the game 19 of 28 from three-point range for a sizzling 67.9 percent clip. The 19 three-point field goals made, breaks the previous record of 18 set in a win over Malone on November 24, 1990, when the Knights were 18 of 24 from beyond the long line.
Calvin's final point total marked its highest scoring output since a 115-65 win over Alma on February 12, 2011.
Calvin (11-10 overall, 6-4 MIAA) raced out ot a 50-30 halftime lead as the Knights shot 50 percent from the floor but 63.6 percent (7 of 11) from three-point range with junior Derrick DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich./Covenant Christian HS) popping in 14 points.
The Knights continued to widen their lead in the second half despite and hit the century mark with 2:49 left to play as 10 different Calvin players received at least 10 minutes of playing time.
Five different Knights hit double-digits in scoring led by DeVries who pumped in 25 points to go with six rebounds. Senior Carlos Amoros-Gutierrez (Wyoming, Mich./Wyoming HS) had a career-high 19 points off the bench while hitting all five of his three-point field goal attempts. Junior Tony DeWitte (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) and sophomore Thad Shymanski (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) had 18 points apiece with DeWitte matching a new career high in points while Shymanski established a new career high-water mark.
Senior Jason Walter (Coloma, Mich./Coloma HS) scored 10 points off the bench to notch his fifth double-figure scoring effort in the last six games.
Calvin held a 40-28 rebounding advantage with junior Alex Bos (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) corralling seven boards.
The victory keeps Calvin within a game of third place Olivet and just two games behind league co-leaders Albion and Trine with four league contests left to play.
Calvin will host Trine on Wednesday night at Van Noord Arena with opening tip set for 7:30 p.m.
