GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin men's basketball team will travel to Hope College on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. for a rivalry showdown.
The Teams: The Flying Dutchmen are 11-8 overall and 4-4 in the MIAA. The Knights bring a 9-10 overall record and a 4-4 MIAA record into the competition. This is the second meeting of the two teams this season as the Knights defeated the Flying Dutchmen 74-70 at home.
The Coaches: Greg Mitchell is in his fifth year with the Flying Dutchmen. Mitchell, a 1989 Hope graduate played four seasons of basketball.Mitchell still holds the Flying Dutchmen record for career 3-point shooting at 46.4 percent (116-of-250). Prior to coaching at Hope, Mitchell spent 25 years coaching varsity boy's basketball at Laingsburg High School near Lansing, Michigan while teaching for Laingsburg and Okemos schools.Mitchell earned a bachelor's degree in physical education from Hope. He also received a master's degree in athletic administration from Michigan State University.
Kevin Vande Streek is in his 22nd year as the head men's basketball coach at Calvin College and in his 28th year as a collegiate coach overall. In 26 years as a head coach, Vande Streek has compiled an overall won-loss record of 504-260. As a coach at Calvin, he has produced a record of 411-180 and is the all-time leader for victories by a Calvin men's basketball coach. He has led Calvin to nine MIAA regular season titles, 10 trips to the NCAA Division III Tournament, two appearances in the NCAA Division III semifinals and one national championship. He attended Ripon College in Wisconsin for a year, where he played one year of varsity basketball, before transferring to Dordt in Sioux Center, Iowa, where he was a three-year varsity player. He graduated from Dordt in 1981 and went on to earn a master's degree in physical education from the University of South Dakota in 1986.
The Players: For the Flying Dutchmen, Jason Beckman leads the team with a 35.6 three-point percentage, an 88.8 free throw average, and a 19.2 scoring average.
For the Knights, Derek DeVries leads the team with a 27.7 three-point average, an 84.0 free throw average, a 6.0 rebound average and a 18.3 scoring average.
