Calvin Men's Basketball Set to Host Anderson

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin men's basketball team will host Anderson on Wednesday night at 8 p.m. in a non-conference matchup. 

The Teams: The Ravens are 1-3 overall on the season. The Knights bring a 3-3 overall record into the competition. 

The Coaches: Owen Handy is entering his 7th season at the helm of the Anderson University men's basketball program.The Holland, Michigan native played varsity basketball as a prep at Holland High School for Coach Mark Werley, graduating from the school in 1999. He double-majored at Wheaton in Political Science and History and holds a Master's Degree in Teaching from Aurora University. Handy came to Anderson from Wheaton College, where he served as an assistant coach for the Thunder for nine seasons under Mike Schauer and Bill Harris.

Kevin Vande Streek is in his 23rd year as head men's basketball coach at Calvin College and in his 28th year as a collegiate coach overall. In 26 years as a head coach, Vande Streek has compiled an overall won-loss record of 504-260. As a coach at Calvin, he has produced a record of 411-180 and is the all-time leader for victories by a Calvin men's basketball coach. He has led Calvin to nine MIAA regular season titles, 10 trips to the NCAA Division III Tournament, two appearances in the NCAA Division III semifinals and one national championship. He attended Ripon College in Wisconsin for a year, where he played one year of varsity basketball, before transferring to Dordt in Sioux Center, Iowa, where he was a three-year varsity player. He graduated from Dordt in 1981 and went on to earn a master's degree in physical education from the University of South Dakota in 1986. 

The Players: For the Ravens, Malik Laffoon leads the team with a .750 three-point percentage, .778 free throw percentage and a 16.8 scoring average. 

For the Knights, Derek DeVries leads the team with a 33.3 three-point average, a 93.1 free throw average, a 6.0 rebound average and an 18.8 scoring average.
