For the first time in his collegiate career, Calvin College junior Derrick DeVries has been named the MIAA Men's Basketball Player of the Week.
A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Covenant Christian High School, DeVries averaged 21.0 points and 8.7 rebounds a game last week as Calvin posted a 2-1 record including a 2-0 record at the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Classic this past weekend.
DeVries opened the week with 24 points in an 86-70 loss at Wheaton Tuesday night. He followed with 14 points and 13 rebounds in a 70-62 victory over Cornerstone Friday at the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Classic. In an 85-63 win over Aquinas Saturday night, he scored a game-high 25 points to go with six rebounds. For his weekend performance, he was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Grand Rapids Press Hall of Fame Classic.
Over the course of the week, DeVries connected on 54.8 percent (23 of 42) of his field goal attempts and 88.2 percent (15 of 17) of his free throw tries. He was also credited with six assists and one steal.
Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Anderson University at 8 p.m. at Van Noord Arena.
