MARYVILLE, Tn. - Calvin picked up a 7-2 victory at Maryville College Monday night to improve to 4-3 on the season.
Junior Trevor VanDuyn (Jenison, Mich./Jenison HS) got the start and went seven strong innings, striking out five and walking only two.
Calvin jumped on Maryville (11-10) for three runs in the top of the first inning to provide the pitching staff with the all the run support it needed. The Knights added two in the fifth and two in the ninth to pull away for the win.
Calvin scored three runs on wild pitches. Junior Quinn Hyndiuk (Brookfield, Wisc./Brookfield East HS) had a two-run RBI double in the ninth. Calvin had just hits offensively but reaped the benefits of eight walks issued by the Maryville pitching staff. Sophomore Ricky Padilla (Poway, Ca./Poway HS) had three walks. Freshman Ryan Peterson scored a pair of runs.
Sophomore Peter VanDyken (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) tossed two innings of shutout relief to pick up his first save of the season. VanDyken struck out three batters without a walk.
The same two teams will tee it up on Tuesday at Maryville in a 7 p.m. contest.
